Sign I might have a small book problem... Dec. 2nd, 2008 @ 02:17 pm
[info]moriath
I have maxed out the number of books I can request at the library. Turns out you can't have more than 20 on hold at a time. I found this out because last night, after realizing that my hold list was dwindling and in desperate need of some reading material, I started requesting books off of the 2008 BBYA nominees list. It didn't take me long to hit the limit, lol.

In positive news, though, I finally got a copy of What I Saw and How I Lied, which won the National Book Award for young people's literature. This will be the third of the five NBA nominees I've read, so let's see if I agree with the experts' opinions, shall we?

Also, I've been considering starting up a completely separate blog for reviewing books, so I can share that blog with people I don't necessarily want reading about some of my other exploits. Should I cross post my reviews here?

So, I did three pictures on Sunday... Dec. 2nd, 2008 @ 11:16 am
[info]beccastareyes
All are exchanges

The first I sadly can't link to since it was for Yuletart (Like Yuletide Treasures, but for fanart and not reserved for rare fandoms (though there is a 'no Harry Potter' rule).)

The second is here, for MAX.

The third is here, for MRCaEX on LJ.

I also have a picture for myself and one for [info]mirisa_ardruna in the works.

The Yuletart picture has seven named characters and a bunch of extras. The MAX picture has two. The MRCAeX has three with a background. The one for me has six, and the one for Kim has two with a real background. That's a total of 20 characters over five pictures, many of whom aren't just standing there. (The picture for me does, but people are at least waving.)

I have gone insane. At least I was told on the MRCAeX pic that my art had improved markedly over the last year or so, some of which is because I try not to draw people standing there looking at the camera with their typical expressions. It makes me miss webcomicing, since that was an excuse to make myself do difficult poses, since I had to tell a story with the pictures.

(In other news, writing Yuletide fic. Ended up writing for a fandom I nominated and had on my wanted list, for a couple I asked for. It makes me want more fic with them, except the fandom is essentially one page on the Pit of Voles. Also makes finding a beta difficult if I want one to check fandom-specific stuff.)

Things that still make me go "Whoa... Dec. 2nd, 2008 @ 01:21 am
[info]moriath
I live in New York City.

Fifth Avenue had the sidewalks blocked off today. Which isn't entirely unusual - it seems like half the time I'm up there there are blockades - either across the streets or along side them - for some event or other.

Turns out the blockades were up this time because Britney Spears is performing out there tomorrow. Now, I don't give a rat's ass about Britney Spears, but it's still kind of cool to me that I live in a place where it's just common knowledge that a pop star will be performing right outside of work on a Tuesday in early December.

I don't work tomorrow, however, so I will not be subject to the Britney pandemonium. Unless she really shows up at the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting on Wednesday, when I do work. Apparently last year, building security kicked everyone out of the store before/during the lighting because Christina Aguilera was there and they didn't want anyone (employee or customer) messing up their security.

New York is crazy intense sometimes. But I do still love it here.

Plans for tomorrow: finish assembling the goddamn invitations. I've been meaning to accomplish a lot more of that over the last two days but I keep taking ridiculous naps in the middle of the day. I just need to tape in the border cards, and then start printing out the actual invitation cards. And then actually design the rest of the inserts. I drive myself crazy sometimes.

that was such an unrealistic earthquake.... Dec. 1st, 2008 @ 08:11 pm

Okay, finished watching all the Lincoln Heights that currently exists, except the Mysterious Missing Episode In Which A Lot Of Stuff Apparently Happens. So except for having a lot of final exams to worry about suddenly, I'm more... here.

Incidentally I realized I never said that I did wear a sign for my transchums, but I did. I learned two things: that people do the most amusing routine when they see a significant amount of lettering they want to read, then afterwards decide that they don't want to admit that they read it, and that the most supportive people around here when it comes to trans equality are teenagers. It's funny, really, because these kids wouldn't think twice about tossing out slurs in casual conversation, but they also clearly want to support minorities in a way older people don't, usually. It's like -- one time one of these same kids tossed a "that's so gay" and I confronted him and he seemed ashamed and apologetic, but a grown man stood up to defend him.

Kind of makes me wonder if the generational thing goes kind of like this: generation 1 embraces the concept of men and women as legal and social equals in the ideal society. Generation 2 grows up with that concept entrenched in its mindset, and thus logically takes it to the next step of households not needing the male head/female caretaker model any more, accepting working mothers, stay-at-home fathers, and same-sex couples. Then the next generation goes "well, if a person's gender role is not defined by their biology...." I mean, I'm simplifying a lot, but in terms of general worldview and what you grow up taking for granted, I think that's how it's working.

To close this post, I'd like to appeal to you to Prove My Sister Right. She considers a certain Bruce Springsteen video creepy. One of her friends thinks it's "sexy" and not creepy. I say it's sexy and creepy. (I love Springsteen anyway and don't think he's a creepy person in real life.) So here's the video:

Japanese homework question Nov. 30th, 2008 @ 03:40 pm
[info]yohjideranged
Okay, for those of you that have studied or are studying Japanese - HELP!

I am conjugating adjectives for a homework assignment.

My question is related to the word for "good" or "ii"

Is this adjective considered a "i" conjugation or a "na" conjugation?

Or rather, should I conjugate it in the present negative as "ii jya arimasen" or "ikuarimasen"?

And what about "takai" (expensive)? Would it be "takai jya arimasen" or "takakuarimasen"?

Grr! So confused by these two! HELP!

EDIT: Okay, I have takai figured out, but ii...*sigh*

This is what I have:

dictionary form - ii
present affirmative - ii desu
present negative - ii arimasen (could be yokuarimasen?)
past affirmative - iikattadesu (could be yokattadesu?)
past negative - iikuarimasendeshita (could be yokuarimasendeshita?)

I am inclined to say that yoku... is correct (according to [info]iff

So, could someone check the above and tell me what is correct?

Thanks to [info]iff for the help, but I am still so confused (not your fault hon...this is just vexing me)!! ARGH!

hey, I'm Natasha/Adrea! I'm 19. I live in Carrollton, Georgia, but I'm from Harris County, Georgia (either way, I'm from Georgia). I hate it here. I'm a freshman at the University of West Georgia. I'm currently majoring in undeclared. I love my school, but not my roommate. my car is the best thing ever except for all the problems of old age it has. I want to live in Alaska one day. I live in my own bubble.

I love listening to music (just not the radio ew), and I love to draw (you can see it here). I like watching CSI and Superjail!. at home, I live with three dogs and a cat (outside of, you know, parents :p). all three of my best friends live somewhere else. I have an obsession with rainbows; I like to play video games; and I try to read when I have the time and attention span for it. I support LSU, and I tend to talk about the problems that I end up with. the past year and half has been kinda rough for me.

I don't comment much (usually due to I don't know what to say at the time) but I do read every entry posted. :>

I'm not looking forward to going to work tomorrow. Not because of anything I have to do -- I'm in the 'advisor wants a report that we can start editing into a paper' stage, which is a good one. Plus, I'm already starting on another project, or picking up an old half-finished one, rather. I had planned to have both of these done, so I could do the final bit for my thesis over my fifth year (possibly edging into my sixth if I had to). I think I also have a meeting for student government but that just means I have to spend an hour and a half talking about money and eating free food.

But, I happened to have an office across from Ed Salpeter, an emeritus professor, and he passed away over the holidays. He was a pretty nice guy -- I mean, the man was in his eighties and officially retired, but he still hung around the department and went to functions. And, since we worked in the same place, he would say hello to me occasionally. The grad student group hosted a dinner for him just last month and he and his wife sat down and talked about the history of the department. She also asked us to do something about the Styrofoam cups the department used, because we're in 2008, and they should know better.

Absent for a couple days Nov. 30th, 2008 @ 01:36 am
[info]yohjideranged
I have to get this research paper done, so no internet for me for the next couple days.

I have a working first draft though and will look at a second draft tomorrow.

Then it is the hard task of choosing the images and scanning them in.

I think I am beyond brain-fried at the moment... and I still have Japanese homework to get finished before Monday.

Then there's that Philosophy paper...I am so going to love having the time off between semesters.

As for comments...I will catch up with all of you in a couple days.

*hugs* Have a good weekend!

My dad's sister and her husband are in jail. For using/making/distributing crystal meth.

As if that's not awesome enough? They also had a three hour standoff with the police.

And people wonder why that side of the family isn't invited to the wedding?

Anyone else have crazy family Thanksgiving stories?

I left the guild of annoyance today.  I thought about saying something first and then I looked around a bit and thought some more on it.  There's one possibly two people I respect there.  Everyone else is very much like the guild leader or worse.  I don't think the guild leader is the person who doesn't fit, I think I'm the person who doesn't fit. In the end it wasn't worth the hassle and the inevitable banning, pms, and random hate thread.   I just moved on to greener pastures.

I posted here as 'soakedinsoul' but didn't take to that username very well, so I thought I'd try this one and it's growing on me.

I'm Jaleesa. I'm 20 years old, 21 on December 25th. :D

I live in Georgia.

I'm colored.

I'm a photography student at the Art Institute of Atlanta.

...I go by middium on LiveJournal, but I really don't like LiveJournal.

I've been sexually assaulted before. It will most likely color some of what I post because...well, there's no way I can avoid that happening. I'm not fond of pity, so unless I'm sure I can talk about it without directly provoking that, it probably won't color my entries much. I save it for the seriousefaceblog, where it just makes more sense to post about it there for some reason. I don't want it in my personal shite.

I tend to think a lot and tend to like others who think alot. I don't care if you're smart, thinking a lot isn't necessarily a dead ringer for intelligence [trust me] but I don't like vacuous entries to read.

I'll comment anything and read everything, however, so give it a shot.

I'm okay. There's just too much happening at once.

Thought I should say that I'm okay because in one of my previous entries I wasn't.

I don't even -- it's so frustrating when you feel like you've forgotten how to put thoughts on paper. (Not really forgotten, there's just too much going on in my brain, but the result is the same.)

Uh... talk to you later?
